Forts at the Main Limes

Forts were erected at a distance of 8-10 km from one another at locations that were safe from flooding. Strategic considerations were also important for the choice of location. Some of the forts (Seligenstadt, Stockstadt, Obernburg, Niedernberg) are located across from secondary valleys of the Main that were used by the Germanic tribes as transportation routes. These were manned by auxiliary troops.

According to the division determined by the Reichs-Limeskommission, the Main Limes lies along Segment 6, northern section (Hainstadt to Wörth) and southern section (Trennfurt to Miltenberg) and is classified as the older, or younger, Main line.
