Hypocausts

The hypocaust tiles were reconstructed as they were found in order to illustrate the construction method used for antique floor heating. The tiles formed supports on which the suspensura panels of tile or stone were layed. On top of this was the floor pavement with a floor cover (terrazzo, mosaics, or whitewash.

Heated by an external fire, the hot air moved through a channel, "praefurnium" under the floor. The hot air also rose through hollow tubes, "tubuli" in the walls and thus created a comfortable room climate.
