Farms were required to supply the troops at the Main Limes with grain. Farms were established around 100 AD in the fertile Wetterau, at Mümling and Gersprenz. These "villae rusticae", measured 60-120ha, Grains, legumes, and hay were transported down the rivers to the military bases.

The most important grains were spelt, barley, and millet. Oats, emmer, rye, and einkorn were also planted. Wheat could only be planted in mild conditions. Flax and poppy provided oil, legumes (beans, peas, and broad beans) were dried and stored. The basic foods were supplemented by vegetables, especially onions, leeks, celery, and chard.
