Slag, raw metal, casting forms, and the features of melting ovens and water basins are evidence of busy handicraft. Metals such as iron, lead, tin, zinc, and copper were worked processed.

Workshops in the forts were primarily for the production and maintenance of weapons. Trained soldiers were assigned to these jobs.

The workshops in the civil settlements were located in the back of the strip houses, not least because of the danger of fire.
