The southern region of the Main Limes delivered timber and red sandstone as far as Mainz/MOGONTIACUM, the legionary fortress of the province Germania superior.

Tree trunks - whose ages can be determined dendrochronologically - were felled in the Odenwald region and were usually shipped down the Main on rafts.

Flat-bottomed barges with a low draught were used to transport blocks of stone.
